The Horny Thorny Rose

A sonnet I wrote for English class: (Spenserian sonnet)

Deep inside the heart of a mountain pass,
My leaves and petals stand tall in a field;
But she is growing in the other grass,
Parted by a barrier that does not yield.
Her beauty is surrounded by a shield,
A shield of wind and grass and storms of dust
That ensures her splendor not be revealed,
Which repels me yet draws me close with lust.
Persevering in hope that love won’t rust,
While erect like a statue of marble
That’s missing a crucial piece of its bust,
Yearns my stamen to penetrate your carpel.
Every night I dream of that one day,
Yet rooted to the stubborn ground we’ll stay.

Bicycling vs. Driving

I’ve been wanting to blog about this for some time now, and I’ve finally got the time to sit down and write about it.  Riding a bike versus driving a car.  I’m a little annoyed by those who think riding a bicycle is for those who cannot afford a car or are not licensed to drive yet.  To tell the truth, a year or two ago, when I rode my bicycle, I saw it as my main form of independent transportation because, well, I didn’t have a license so I could only get to places by myself with my bicycle.  Over time, however, I began to love and appreciate the beauty and simplicity of riding a bicycle, instead of just hurrying to get from one place to another.  As I began to appreciate the simplicity of this self-sufficient lifestyle, I started to take driving lessons.   A few months later, now that I have my driver’s license, I have begun to indulge in both worlds.  What many people must have thought is that once I became licensed to drive a car, I would abandon my bike because obviously, I have a much faster way to get around.  Others might have thought that I would continue riding my bike occasionally because gas prices are high, or for other economic reasons.  I say both of these assumed statements are false.  I drive my car to far places, while I ride my bicycle to closer places.  One of the reasons I wouldn’t ride too far is that once when I rode to Newport Beach and back, my sensitive skin became sunburned quite badly and I had to suffer for a month of eczema afterwards, even though I had suntan lotion on.  I have been told it is partly due to exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, so to be on the safe side, I hesitate when it comes to riding long distances now.  Also, if I have to climb a bunch of hills to get to, say, a place in Chino, I wouldn’t want to be in a sweaty mess when I get there.  It is in these situations where I opt to drive my car there.  Otherwise, if I want to ride my bicycle for the sake of riding my bicycle and enjoying the environment around me, I would take that route, pun intended.

this was my design for the senior gear. it should have been 3 or less colors, so this doesn’t qualify. :[ i’ll make my own shirt with it still, though.
